Growing up, I never imagined a world full of opportunities. I had never imagined myself past the boundaries of South Africa. Although growing up in a sheltered environment kept me from bad experiences, it has had its limitations on me, which is an inability to think globally. This problem now stares me in the face as I enter my career path. Science in South Africa functions at a much smaller scale in comparison to the first world countries and this prompts me to acquire knowledge from a location past the boundaries of SA. To me this is the most daunting idea because I have never been overseas and have never experienced the workings of a different nation.

When I first heard about the Impact Young Lives Foundation I was touched by the drive people have to help one another. I do believe that it is a wonderful opportunity to enrich lives of those who have not had a global experience and believe that they have little opportunity in life. I also believe that a global experience will allow for young people to have a better idea on how to contribute to and improve our nation.

I believe that the IYL foundation will help me to expand my horizons and think globally. Throughout my experiences in life I have learnt to take all I can get from an experience and I feel that the IYL foundation will grow me in many ways. As a cancer researcher it would be gratifying for me to realize that I am contributing to a much larger picture and this would assure my purpose in the field that I’m in. This global experience will allow me to realize my global contribution and desire to solve the global problem of cancer.
